Backblaze Review - Unlimited Cloud Backup for Your PC or Mac
Published on 10th Aug 2025 by Simon Fearby

Effortless, secure, and affordable backup—tested and reviewed. After setup, Backblaze runs automatically in the background, keeping everything backed up without me needing to do anything.

My verified my email by clicking on a link form Backblaze that was emailed to me.

I set a strong password

I downloaded the Backblaze Personal Backup client

Installing Backblaze
I saved and ran the install_backblaze.exe

The installer asked for my email address that I signed upto Backblaze with.

I entered my Backblaze password

Backblaze analysed my computers internal hard drives (6 drives), this took 10 minutes.

After anylysing my drives Backblaze decided to back up everything (I do not want everything backed up straight away)./p>
Apologies, at this point Backblaze decided to switch over to my Windows Dark colour theme.

Paused Backblaze Backups
At this stage I paused backups so I can set and encryption key to encrypt all of my files before being sent to Backblaze

My random encryption key was added. If I forget this my backups are useless.

Backblaze Backup Order
Backblaze automatically backs up your newest and recently changed files first, starting with your main drive (usually C:), then moves on to other files and drives over time. It focuses on smaller files first and runs quietly in the background without slowing down your computer. The backup order of files and folders is not guaranteed.
My next step was to Pause backups, then open Settings then view the Files Scheduled for backup tab to have a look at what files were being backed up.
I could then see if any folders being backed up can be excluded.

I wish Backblaze had a feature that I could set which drive or folder to backup first, but Backblaze decides which file/folder gets backed up and when.

I reviewed the files scheduled for backup tab to see which files and folders were being backed up. If they weren't a priority, then I would go to the Exclusions tab, exclude those files or folders, and when the other files and folders that were a priority were finished, then I removed the exclusion to allow the second priority things to back up.

After I set exclusions on things I didn't want, I had about 1.6 terabytes of information to back up. I then repeated a few times excluding things that I didn't need to try and lower this down because 1.6 terabytes would take me about 20 days to upload.

Over a few days, I kept reviewing the files scheduled for backup, set exclusions, waited for backups of higher priority things, and then removed the exclusions.
It's a little bit OCD to micromanage priorities of backups because Backblaze will just try and get everything, but I wanted certain files to be backed up first just in case disaster happened.

I managed to remove about 500GB of files from the backup queue, and I let the backups run for a few days. Backblaze has really good options for setting schedules, backup priorities, and the amount of data you use, so it's actually not going to interfere with other traffic.

I do not need to by now
