Introduction

This post is for anyone curious about the BYD Shark 6 PHEV Ute. This is not for tradies or extreme 4x4 rock crawlers, but for everyday drivers who want a capable hybrid for Bunnings runs, tip trips, family camping, and the occasional 240V-powered adventure (even charging a Tesla if needed). Our aim is to document everything we have learn for my wife's new car.

We already have Tesla and are sold on the electric technology, drive train and charging but we are not taking the Tesla on light or medium 4x4 tracks or too far away from infrastructure. Enter the need for something like a BYD Shark 6.We’ve also got two cattle dogs who need a Ute - not a sedan - for weekend adventures.

This is not a sponsored post and we will not be trying to sell you a certain type of car. When we bought a EV 2 years, we blogged about our assumptions and experience (https://fearby.com/#ElectricVehicles), this is the same but for PHEV.

Engine Types: MHEV, HEV, PHEV, EV, ICE

Before we begin, the term hybrid is a bit misleading and not all hybrids are the same.

Information in the following video is not accurate (Battery Capacity per class, Overseas cars, PHEV running costs are dependant on you 90% daily drive, EV Maintenance costs, infrastructure availability etc), but it is a good refresher for the different kinds of engines.

What Is the BYD Shark 6 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle?

The BYD Shark 6 is a plug-in hybrid Ute that combines a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with two electric motors and a battery, giving it strong performance with low fuel use. It can drive around 100 km on electric power alone and over 800 km in total when the petrol engine joins in (Less if you have a heavy foot and even less if you are towing). Power goes to all four wheels for solid traction on and off the road, and it can tow up to about 2.5 tonnes. Built on BYD’s new hybrid platform and using their safe “Blade” battery, the Shark aims to offer the comfort and efficiency of an EV with the range and flexibility of a petrol vehicle — ideal for city runs, family trips, and weekends away.

Who is BYD?

BYD Company Ltd. (BYD) is a Chinese manufacturing business that began in batteries and now is a global automaker in the new-energy vehicle space. It employs around 900,000 to 1 million people as of 2024, including some ~110,000 R&D engineers, giving it one of the largest workforces in the auto industry. In comparison, Ford Motor Company had about 171,000 employees worldwide at end-2024. And Volkswagen Group recorded about 679,472 employees globally at end-2024.

Financially, BYD pulled in revenue of roughly CNY 777.1 billion (~US $107 billion) in 2024 and net profit of about CNY 40.25 billion (~US $5.6 billion), up ~34% year-on-year.

On market share, BYD is rapidly growing, increasing its share in the Chinese auto market (from ~12.5% in 2023 to ~16.2% in 2024) and closing in on legacy global players.

Top 10 Pros & Cons: 2025 BYD Shark 6

Before ordering we did what any tech-minded driver would do - we searched google and YouTube for real reviews, then visited a local dealership. We wanted to understand how the BYD Shark 6 balances its petrol and electric systems, what its true electric-only range looks like, and how practical it really is for family life, camping, and everyday use.

We saw many early pre launch video of the BYD Shark not doing so well of road. Having a Tesla Model Y we know Software is a major part of the EV/PHEV experience and decided to wait a few months (or more) for BYD to iron out issues.
